Meistersingers to perform in London
June 1, 2019
The Meistersingers Civic Chorus of Hattiesburg announces its 2018-2019 season with exciting news: the return of Joseph Wilkinson as Artistic Director, and an invitation to sing in London, England. Under Wilkinson’s leadership the volunteer community chorus will continue to offer top quality choral music to Pine Belt audiences. In addition to presenting their regular concert season, the Meistersingers have been invited to perform with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London on June 1, 2019. The group, under the baton of maestro Wilkinson, will join the Philharmonic in Cadogan Hall, London, to perform Te Deum, a work by American composer Dan Forrest. On the same concert the Meistersingers will serve as the core of a mass choir to present Forrest’s Jubilate Deo, a global setting of Psalm 100, “O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands.” The work, in seven different sections and seven different languages, draws from a worldwide spectrum of musical influences. “We are honored to be invited to perform in London. As Artistic Director, I am thrilled to lead the Meistersingers as we represent Mississippi in our first concert abroad,” said Wilkinson. “We invite interested singers to audition and join us on our adventure!”
The Chorus begins its regular season on October 21, 2018 with a concert built around the theme of Peace. Selections are inspired by the teachings of peacemakers Martin Luther King, Jr., Jesus, and others. In March, the Meistersingers’ concert ‘Harmony” is anchored by Forrest’s Te Deum. On their FestivalSouth concert in June, just eight days after their London debut, the chorus will give a hometown encore performance of the Forrest Jubilate.
